New episodes of “The Boys” now on Amazon Prime Video: Is the 2nd season as terrific as the 1st?

The first season of the somewhat different comic adaptation “The Boys” was one of the best series of the year for us in 2019. At the start of the continuation of the Amazon series, we will tell you whether Season 2 can build on it.

Marvel and Co. are currently pausing due to the Corona situation on the big screen. Thanks to the second season of “The Boys”, there is still a superhero replenishment on the home screen – even if it could hardly be further from the comic blockbusters of the “Avengers” brand.

In the world of “The Boys”, most of the “heroes” are known to be anything but heroic, but rather corrupt assholes who do not shy away from murder themselves. That doesn’t change in the second season either. On the contrary: The Supes in the new episodes are nastier than ever, not least thanks to a frightening and diabolical newcomer – and make season 2 just as crazy a pleasure as season 1.

Hopeless fight

After they had rather unsuccessfully messed with the supposed model hero Homelander (Antony Starr) and his super troupe The Seven, Hughie (Jack Quaid) and his colleagues went into hiding. Hughie doesn’t want to give in so easily and with the help of Seven member Starlight (Erin Moriarty) finally make the true origin of the Supes public.

At the same time, tensions within the Seven grew bigger and bigger, when a new member suddenly appeared in the form of the powerful Stormfront (Aya Cash) who threatened to overtake Homelander – much to the displeasure of the unstable Captain America Superman blend.

Consistent continuation

Not only in terms of content, but also in terms of quality, the second “The Boys” season ties in almost seamlessly with the opening season. The comic adaptation may still not go overboard as unrestrainedly as the Gaga template by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson, but it still hardly takes prisoners either.

Although it takes a little while after the extremely bloody and peppy opening scene, until the action really gets going, it then comes up with all sorts of crazy ideas (keywords: impaled whale and speaking gills) as well as sensitive character moments.

The mix of coarse satire (with many accurate swipes at our society today) and abysmal drama also works with the new episodes – which of course the strong cast again plays a major role (Aya “Stormfront” Cash provides superhero super-psycho and Season 1 highlight Antony “Homelander” Starr, at least in terms of threat, even once again in the shadows).

Detailed criticism of the season finale

Although we were already able to watch the complete second “The Boys” season in advance, we want to leave it at this point with a shorter impression, because this time Amazon is pursuing a different release strategy than with season 1 and so initially only three new episodes on Prime Video ready LOSMOVIES. We will then deliver a detailed review for the season finale on October 9, 2020.

So much can still be revealed: We are still far from enough of the rich and well thought-out superhero world of “The Boys” and are already looking forward to the already confirmed third season.

The first three of eight episodes of the second season “The Boys” can now be accessed on Amazon Prime Video *. In the coming weeks, a new episode will appear on Friday.
